The whole course, on a real Vim engine
VimNinja 2 replaces the old VimNinja at the same address. The old one had 16 exercises; this one has 82 chapters in 14 tracks, a daily review, practice rounds and a golf course. Everything below is new.
The course
- 82 chapters in 14 tracks From i and Esc to macros, Ex substitutions, real refactors and setting up your own editor. Foundations and The Vim Way, 13 chapters, are free.
- Lessons you play One idea at a time, a picture of what the keys do, a demo you start yourself, then exercises generated from real code, so there’s always a fresh one. Recall rounds to make it stick, and boss rounds to prove it did.
- A par for every exercise Each exercise knows its shortest solution. Change a string in 16 keys and you’ll see the 9-key way with ci" right next to yours, then watch it replay.
- Find your level Know hjkl already? Three quick questions place you in the right chapter.
Every day
- The Daily 5 A short review of the commands you’re about to forget, each on its own schedule. Nothing due? You get your weakest five.
- Practice rounds 33 drills, one for each group of commands. Play a set number of goals, race the clock, or go endless.
- Daily golf 60 holes: turn the text into the target in as few keys as you can. Leaderboards, a share card, and the best solutions to watch once you’ve solved the hole.
- Your stats A streak with one freeze for the day life happens, a year of activity, and how well you hold each command.
- The Vim cheat sheet Every command the course teaches, each linked to the chapter that teaches it, plus the basics everyone looks up first: save, quit, undo, find and replace.
- Vim online A free Vim buffer to try any command in, on the same engine as the lessons. What you write stays in your browser.
Under the hood
- Our own Vim engine, checked against Neovim Normal, Insert, Visual and command-line modes, written for the browser. Every lesson’s solution, every demo and every golf par is replayed in real Neovim too, and both have to end up with the same text.
- Light and dark A dark studio theme and a paper-white one, in settings.
Accounts and Pro
- No sign-up needed Progress saves in your browser. Sign in with Google or an email and password only to keep it in step across devices.
- Your data, yours Export everything stored with your account as a JSON file, or delete the account, from your account page.
- Lifetime Pro One payment unlocks all 14 tracks and every chapter added later. No subscription.
If you used the old VimNinja
- Same sign-in, same account Continue with Google as before and you land in your account. Bought Pro on the old site? You still have it.
- Progress starts fresh The old exercises are gone, so their progress didn’t move over. Three questions put you back where you belong.
- Old links still work Bookmarks to the old pages redirect to their new homes.
